LEARN HOW TO THROW

I am delighted to have taught many students how to make pots and to see the joy that comes from exploring the transformation of mud into a bowl, beaker or other vessel. I teach 1:1 or 2:1 with each lesson lasting two hours and costing £80 for one person and £100 for two.

Everyone can make a pot, everyone can learn the basics, every single person can do this! I have vouchers should you wish to gift an experience as a wedding present, birthday celebration or post exam chill out.

When you work with clay you begin to realise how astonishing your hands are.  I will teach you how to use them in tandem, how the slightest change of pressure or of angle will affect your clay, will change the shape of your pot.  To begin with it’s an alien, even daunting consideration but, with time and practice, your hands become skilled and the dancing of your fingers becomes effortless.  It’s the same with your breathing, early on I see my students almost holding their breath in concentration and before long, you will flow with ease, mesmerised, almost hypnotised by evolution of shape from that original lump of mud.

The first lesson takes courage.  You are pushing yourself to learn something new.  I take you, step by step by step, small stages of process, learning those first skills, the waltz before the foxtrot.  In time you will arrive at a lesson with a form in mind, a design to challenge yourself, you may move from simple bowls to handled jugs and lidded pots and then even teapots.

We will stretch our backs part way through the lesson, take a pause before regrouping and continuing.  In time you can learn about glaze chemistry, firing schedules, even how to set up your own studio.

You will experience great delight and frustration, your patience will be tested but perseverance rewarded.  But beware, it can be addictive.
